A young and headstrong Jesus struggles with love, addiction, destiny, head lice, and time travel. So, it's probably not what you think, unless you think everything is wrong. Imagine if Kurt Vonnegut and Hunter S. Thompson collaborated on a new sci-fi/fantasy version of The Bible. The Autobiography of Jesus X is not for the faint of heart! The prophet Yeshua Tzion is a cynical, dreadlocked pothead crackpot who's done all sorts of despicable things. For which He wonders if forgiveness is possible. Because now he is a only a ghost of the God he once was - now retired. After this one incarnation as a human being on Earth, he quit. As God, he had become indifferent. But as a tall black Jew with blue eyes and red hair in the Roman Empire, he proved to be too smart for his own good. Or maybe just too human. He tried to quit.

The story is non-linear, with three different broken timelines. Part science fiction, part fantasy, part exposé, and part stand-up comedy routine, the narrator all but frames it as His last message to humanity. So we might want to listen. Or read. Or whatever.

This text is intended for adults. It contains coarse language, graphically-violent imagery, strong sexual content, and depictions of drug abuse.

This story is a work of speculative fiction and all of the characters, groups, and events portrayed are either products of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously. Very fictitiously. Many of the views and opinions expressed are not those of the author or his affiliates, and should not be misconstrued as being such. The author and his affiliates waive responsibility for any and all emotional disparagement that may result from the reading of this story.

When I finished this book, my first thought was 'wow', quickly followed by; 'how the hell do I write a review for this?' I am still not entirely sure, but I will do my best. I will quickly say though, that if you are a fan of Hunter S Thompson or William Burroughs, then you will more than likely enjoy the style and content of this book. In brief, this is the story of Jesus Christ, from his creation in human form, to his childhood, adolescence and beyond. I admit there were times I got a little bit lost, as the timeline jumped back and forth a bit, but I think a more intelligent person than me would be fine with this. I am not a religious person, and never have been, so I was never going to be offended by anything in this book. In fact the reverse happened. I found myself becoming rather interested in the creation of Christ, and his followers, not to to mention his family life. In some ways this works as a coming of age tale. The young Jesus has ideas of becoming some sort of prophet, and from a young age is able to stand up for what he believes in, what he sees as right. His character development was brilliant, and the entire book is brilliantly written and extremely intelligent. There were two scenes that I found very hard to read; one involving an abortion and one involving incest, so if you are easily offended then no, this is not the book for you. Despite that, the book kept me gripped. Particularly poignant and powerful were the chapters towards the end of the book; Jesus is trying to decide whether to take his own life, and a future unhuman form of him appears and takes him to various points in the future to show him different ways people have interpreted his words. As Jesus himself pointed out many times earlier on in the book, his followers were not always very good at listening to or understanding what he tried to teach. In the future, he witnesses how religion has been edited, rewritten, interpreted and used in ways to suit the people in power. From child abuse, to the Israeli/Palestine conflict, and through to the 9/11 atrocity, Jesus is unable to comprehend how his words have resulted in his followers killing and maiming each other in the name of religion. Powerful stuff indeed. Huge respect to this author for many things; courage, fantastic writing, and amazing research to name but a few. Did I enjoy reading this? Well, not exactly. Was I gripped from start to end? Yes, pretty much. And am I immediately going to download another book from this author? Yes, absolutely. Hence the 5 star rating.
